This course is designed to introduce DFLL students to university-level English writing. We will continue to focus on one key pattern of paragraph development, argument. First, we will learn to use MLA style in citing texts and documenting sources; and then we will learn to write arguments based on individual responses to texts selected from various literary genres, including novel, poem, film and drama. Students will rehearse using MLA style through two exercises and practice writing arguments through three paragraphs and three revisions. Students will also have the chance to talk about their own writing processes and read critical responses written by other scholars through one group presentation. Students are expected to attend regularly, to read with diligence and criticality, and to passionately engage with course assignments and class discussions.
